VFW Chung Mei Post 8358 - WWII Veterans

   
 

 

 

 

 

Kern Chew: PFC, U.S. Army, Co “A” 381st Infantry, Rifleman745, sent to Hawaii, Leyte, Okinawa, and Saipan. Battles: Southern Philippines Campaign; Ryukyua Campaign. Medals: Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Philippines Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign Medal. His platoon suffered heavy casualties in the battle for Okinawa, only 6 survivors in one of the battle; on that day, he was one of them. He was wounded many times but was severely wounded by enemy 90mm artillery shell.

 

 
 

Lawrence Chew: PFC, U.S. Army, “C” Co, 414th Infantry Regiment, 104 Infantry Division (Timberwolves), Rifleman 745, sent to European-Africa-Middle Eastern Theatre. Battles and campaigns: Rhineland; Central Europe; Ardennes. Medals: Bronze Star Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 battle stars, WWII Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal.

 

 
 

Dutch Chinn: PFC, U.S. Army Air Corp, 1340th Army Air Force Base, Aircraft Mechanic, sent to China-Burma-India Theatre. Duties: help deliver 100% octane airplane fuel over the Himalayas (hump) to the Flying Tigers, loaned to U.S. Army “sign” shop in China to make signs and enjoyed a civilian like duty for the remainder of his military service. He later received his promotion to corporal.

 

 
 

Milo Chun: PFC, U.S. Army, Sep Point Det 1985 SCU, sent to Africa. Battles and campaigns: Algeria-French-Moroccan, Tunisian, Sicilian, Naples Foggia, Rome Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Medals: Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, American Defense, Distinguished Unit Badge, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon w/8 bronze stars. He was wounded by shrapnel.

 

 
 

Henry Kim: PFC, U.S. Army, TRP B 38th MECH CAV REC SQ FT KNOX KY, Duty NCO 566, 28 MAR 45 – 24 OCT 46, then enlisted with U.S. Marines Corps 19 MAY 47, to serve three years, Infantryman (0311), Corrective Services Guard (5811), sent to China and promoted to CPL. Combined medals: American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, China Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal.

 

 
 

Joe Fong: S Sgt, U.S. Army, Infantry, Refrigeration Mechanic 322, sent to European African Middle Eastern Theatre. Battles and campaigns: Central Europe, Rhineland. Medals: WWII Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal Germany, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal. Along the Rhine River Joe fired on German ME-109 airplane. There were lots of activities. Somehow the German figured out our position and Captain Kelly ordered us out of there ASAP. Looking back we can see the area we just left were under heavy artillery bombardment. Also, unknowingly we went through a mine field. Capt. Kelly saved the recon unit that day.

 

 
 

Robert Fong: PFC , U.S. Army, 35 th Infantry Regiment, Artillery Mechanic 834, sent to Asia Pacific Theatre. Battle : Luzon . Medals: Philippine Liberation Ribbon W/1 Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal W/1 Bronze Star, WWII Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal. The enemy cut the phone lines; Headquarter needed a runner, someone small and fast so Robert was selected. I was in sight of the enemies but they must have thought I was one of their own. Everything worked out well.

 

 
 

 

Ping Leong: S Sgt, U.S. Air Corp, Airplane Mechanic, WWII, sent to Pacific Island.

 

 

 
 

 

Kenneth Mar: PFC, U.S. Army, Company C, 23rd Infantry, Automatic Rifleman 746, sent to European Theatre. Battles and Campaigns: Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe Campaigns. Medals: 3 Bronze stars for aforementioned campaigns, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Eastern European African Middle Eastern Theatre Medal. Immediately went to combat upon arrival. Survived mortar round in mop up operation in Brest, France because he lay in fox hole to size up the dept, while comrade standing up in next fox hole was not so fortunate. He and his comrades enjoyed French wine found in wine cellars. During mop up operation in Battle of the Bulge, an attack on his hill side position surrounded him and his comrade while in a fox hole. His comrade killed two enemy soldiers at near point blank range. While still surrounded, they surrendered and were POW. While working as POW, moving captured chocolate candies from first floor to the third floor of storage building, he and his POWs help themselves to the candies since there were no guards in between floors. After the war in Europe, he returned U.S. and was ready to fight in the Pacific but atomic bomb ended the war. One can most certainly say guardian angels were looking over his shoulder.

 
 

 

Joseph Tang: T/5, U.S. Army, 987th Signal Operation Co, Radio Repairman 648, sent to Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Battles and campaigns: China Offensive; China Defensive. Medals: WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal. Joe was in the same unit as Harmon Wong Woo, the 987th Signal Operation Co. (all Chinese unit). He was in basic training with Huey Ong.

 

 
 

Gene Wong: S Sgt, U.S. Army Air Corp, 407th Air Service Squadron, Supply NCO 821, sent to Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Battles and Campaigns: China Defensive. Medals: Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal. His unit, almost 100% Chinese, supported the famous Flying Tigers.

 

 
 

David Yee: T/Sgt, U.S. Army Air Corp., 4127th AAFBU McClellan Field, CA, Flight Maintenance Gunner 748, sent to Dakar, North Africa. Battles and campaigns: Air Offensive Europe; Rome-Arno; Air Combat Balkans; No. France; Rhineland; Central Europe. Medals: Good Conduct Medal, Air Medal, EAME Service Medal w/1 Bronze Service Star and 1 Silver Battle Star. His plane was shot down. He parachuted and was captured and imprisoned in Stalag POW camp.

 

 
  Samuel Yee: Sgt., U.S. Air Corp, 407th Service Squadron, Air Supply Technician 826, sent to Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Battles and campaigns: India-Burma-China Offensive; China Defensive. Medals: WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, American Campaign Medal. He traveled by “Liberty Ship” and British transport to reach his assignment destination. The ship that went ahead of them was hit by Japanese torpedoes.
